How do port processes work?

Port logistics operates in the planning of cargo displacement. It is responsible for the efficient planning of the transport chain, that is, it studies and plans the most efficient ways of transporting, loading, unloading, storing and receiving goods negotiated in international trade.

Structure and impact on the logistics process

Some ports around the world still have two potential limiting factors, the bureaucracy, and the structure of their ports. Low investment in infrastructure is one of these problems and has compromised transport logistics in some of the largest ports. Therefore, it’s necessary to invest in infrastructure aimed at facilitating contact between ports and other means of transport (rail, river, and road) and reducing final costs, since port logistics influences national industry and interferes with the flow of goods of international trade.

Parts of port logistics

Port logistics can be divided into three parts:

  1. Fixed complex: referring to the physical port structure;
  2. Administration: concerns the management of ports;
  3. Operation: responsible part for the transit of goods.

To the process easier and bring convenience to customers we created B2B Freight, a global logistics platform created to allow  companies to quote and book freight and logistics services online. To learn more, click here!

Stages of port proccesses

It is important to note that technology and artificial intelligence are being implemented more in smart ports around the world, with the aim of reducing bottlenecks, operational errors, deadlines and costs.

  • Dock authorization: the vessel is released to dock and is organized along with the other vessels to follow the docking order.
  • Mooring at the port: moment when the ship pulls up to the pier assisted by tugboats and professionals working in the port.
  • Unloading and loading of goods: in this stage, ships are unloaded through the handling and transport of containers, this process must be fast to reduce the time that the ship remains docked.
  • Packaging of containers: after unloading, the container is taken to the port yard.
  • Container removal: after the release of the cargo by the Internal Revenue Service, the documents for the release of the cargo from the port are analyzed, after which the container is processed and delivered to the truck responsible for removing it and proceeding by land to the final destination.
